The recent transition to Period 9 prompts one to consider whether to change or retain your current flying star configuration. (assuming that such a “change” is actually possible, is another topic altogether. Given the recent shift, most of our properties are unlikely to be in Period 9. Unless you've moved into a property completed after February 4th, 2024, or your house is over 160 years old, your property will most likely fall under Flying Stars from Periods 1-8.
So, what defines an ideal Flying Star Chart?
Given the significance of Sheng Qi in Period 9, support for Sheng Qi Star #1 is essential for optimal results.
In Period 9, charts with well-supported #1, #8, & #9 stars thrive. It's imperative to ensure correct support for these there mountain stars, especially #9, regardless of palace positioning. Without proper support, a chart remains devoid of meaning and is just a collection of useless numbers.
Many charts exemplify this balance. I've curated examples and outlined activation methods. Rather than striving to transition to a Period 9 chart, focus on making your existing chart Period 9 compatible.
To start with, it is worth noting that double sitting or double facing charts are suboptimal as they compromise activation potential. Instead of pursuing a Period #9 chart, concentrate on adapting your current chart for Period 9 compatibility.
There are several techniques that one can use, theoretically speaking, to change a chart, views & opinions differ, but in application, it may be a completely different story. These methods are not my opinion, simply sharing what we have been taught over the years.
All of these above methods are highly questionable, and unless a copious amount of renovation that involves extending, and involving the roof, I have not, in my extensive practice, seen any change with the first 3 methods.
Towards the end of 2020 a client approached me with a whole set of problems,(not money though) and primarily the issues were health and relationship based.
A visit to the home and office building gave me the answers and I had to ask them to move out of both home and office. Something I hardly ever do. Their issues started when the made money initially, and built a new mansion, and got even worse, when years later, after building and moving into the new office tower, the husband suffered a terminal illness.
Moving out of their beautiful home, and building a new one from scratch was readily agreed upon once I was able to identify the underlying problems and the new house construction is under way, racing towards completion in Period 8 with Period 9 compliance.
But this is about the office.
Housed in a self owned tower that dominates the skyline of the city, moving out was a potential hornets nest but since I was able to clearly outline the issues they faced and relate them to the building, they were convinced easily, and readily agreed to move to another area.
The existing office building had three issues.
1.One was a curved blade sha that hit the sitting of the building that sat South East. With the 5 in the South East coming the next year, 3 months from the time of our meeting, we had precious little time.
2.The second issue was the central core that had the elevators and utilities and there was nothing we could do about it.
3.The third was the entrance in the North East, a Feng Shui nightmare, with even worse, massive bodies of water, courtesy an in-competent Vaastu consultant (God bless them though, for the amount of business their work gives us)
We met late in October 2020. The client asked what sense it made fixing the building they would be leaving and my response was as usual, you need to fix what you can to make the move easier.
I have to say they were extremely co-operative and working against time, they’ve reconstructed the facade of this 30 storey structure to make the entrance of the building move from North East, which is not only unacceptable because it is Direct Spirit but also not good by 8 Mansions, being a Jue Ming door. Moving the entrance to the North sector made it an Indirect Spirit entrance, always good to have, and in 8 Mansions it was Sheng Qi, again great energy and the added bonus was that it effectively gives a 1-4 combination of Door (N-#1) to Sitting (SE #4).
They also managed to re-locate the access gates from the North West to the North, same benefits as above. They shut off all the offending water in the North West & North East. One has to hand it to the architects who pulled this off, translating Feng Shui requirements and producing a result that looked effortless and beautiful like it was meant to be this way.
We fixed each floor individually using various techniques as each unique situation warranted, using bare minimum Eight Mansions and Xuan King Da Gua as the dominant methods, then layering with other techniques. We also fixed the owner families personal homes.
Long story short, (and this is what happens when the Feng Shui is good), they acquired another building in another location slightly out of city limits. A month later some local law changed making it cost effective from the taxation point for their kind of businesses to relocate outside the city, and precisely in the area they had relocated to.
They would have had to move anyhow. They just did it sooner on my advice for Feng Shui reasons. After the new laws, the prices in the new location naturally shot up and they were at a distinct advantage as they had paid much less. So in that aspect something worked for them.
We are working hard on the relocation that’s almost complete now.
But destiny repeats and does not leave you, so they just acquired an additional and adjacent building that has, God help us, a central core. Just like the building they left. This time, however, the central core was massive, without the problem of elevators and staircases, and what was in the center was a beautiful atrium or what is known in Feng Shui terms and very desirable, an air well.
My sketch is poorly drawn but should give an idea because I cannot share the real plans obviously, but it gives you the picture.
With mountains behind generating Qi, that collects on the boundaries of the water below, this is the perfect Feng Shui setting! Zoom in, and see the little homes scattered along the slopes of the hills. That is where, coincidentally, conforming to the principles of perfect Feng Shui, the good Qi collects and works its magic...It is little wonder why people run away to places like these the first chance they get! It's...perfect!
As Feng Shui enthusiasts, we have studied various mountain forms in theory. Maybe seen and explained these forms as line drawing shapes. However, until one has seen them in their actual physical form, it is a bit hard to be able to identify a mountain shape.

I am regularly faced with so many questions (and panic) about the Period 9 that’s closing in on us, in the next 10 months, that I decided to put everyone’s mind at rest with this article.
The first misconception is that you need to “change your Flying Star Chart to a P9 one in order to receive Wang Qi or current Good luck. This cannot be further from the truth.
The combination of numbers that appear at your door have no meaning unless they are correctly supported.
To go back a little. The Flying star chart will not magically change if you tilt your door, especially of you live in an apartment or any type of shared accommodation like an apartment block.
What one needs to do is to work towards Period 9 COMPLIANCE, and that does not include changing the chart. Working with the chart you already have, this is what one needs to check, ensure, or activate.
I have stated this in order of convenience.
Support from the Forms for Sitting Stars 1, 8 & 9
First we Check: We need to have the areas which contain the sitting stars 1, 8 & 9 raised, or as we like to say, “higher ground”. Now this may not always be possible, it seldom is exactly like that. So in the worst case scenario, at least we should ensure that the South (9 in the Luoshu) in Period 9 is higher, and no water to violate the integrity of the Direct Spirit compliance that is required by that sector.
Then we Ensure & Activate: This is best done by keeping the South sector quiet and Yin, undisturbed, as this is the correct way to activate a sitting star. No entrances, water or openings are preferred here.
Facing Stars 1,8 & 9
First we Check: The palaces that contain facing stars 1,8 & 9 should be open, preferably have a Ming Tan, are active, meaning there should be entrances, doors. The ground should be LOWER. Again, this is the best-case scenario and once again may not be possible.
Then we Ensure & Activate: We do this by keeping these sectors active, bright, vibrant, moving & active which activates the facing star. Placing water in case the ground is not lower, and one cannot have an entranceway, is one way to “wake up” the facing stars.
However: We have not yet addressed the aspect of Direct and Indirect spirit, which means the good sitting stars should be in Yin palaces, and looking at the Luoshu, these would be NW (6), West (7), NE (8) and South (9) & the good facing stars should reside in North (1), SW (2), East (3) & SE (4).
This knocks so many of the so-called magic flying star combinations, out of the reckoning.
So, will changing your flying star chart to P9 be better?
One of the worst Flying Star charts are the P9 ones, simply because the facing & sitting 9’s appear together in the same palace, which effectively means that only one of the two can be active at a time, and you lose out from the benefit of the other.
So what does one do?
ESSENTIAL SECTORS:
These are all the LuoShu sectors that are covered above, but there are some sectors that are more important than the others.
In order of importance:
Even if present, the South sector should not be maimed, meaning there should be no sha-qi in the sector, like a tower, lamp post, dead tree trunk, broken building, broken or badly shaped mountain, sky-crack or similar issues. This again impacts the property negatively.
Outside of the P9 aspect, regardless, South & North of ANY property should not be missing, even more so in P9. South brings among other things, passion while North contributes to intelligence, two factors once simply cannot do without.
Now you see, you can take care of the 1-8 & 9 in any chart, not necessarily in P9. To make things easier, I have used the P8 & P9 flying star charts (all 16 of them) to show, after following the above rules but not taking into consideration the forms, which are very relevant, where one can place water (in blue) and where it is best kept quiet (in red) to make life easier for you.
We always take care of the thee white stars, 1-6 & 8. In case you were wondering why 8 is not “past luck” in P9.
If you have the option always select a Sheng or Wang palace to activate.
Now to complicate your life a little bit, let us throw in the Sheng & Wang layer so that you are able to see in the selected sectors, where the stars really will perform, and those are the superior charts. If you have any of those charts, that have the 1-9 & 8 in the Sheng & Wang palaces, these are the palaces that will do better than the others. Take care to retain such a chart rather than trying to change the period of your property. If you are not familiar with this aspect, you can just assume which sectors function at better efficiency. This system is based on the trigram sitting and are the same palaces for any period as this is based on the sitting of the house and not time related.
To make your life easy, we have colour coded all the charts:
A facing star shaded blue means it is safe or good to put water & have activity (Yang)
A sitting star shaded pink indicates good to use the room, & activate by keeping it calm (Yin)
A Base star shaded green, means that sector or palace is either Sheng or Wang, indicating that in this palace, all the stars will perform well, showing their true colors (you do know that in the 81 combinations we have two columns always that say Auspicious & Inauspicious, so this is the Auspicious version)
Now if you are familiar with the hexagrams, you can be more Period 9 compliant by ensuring that your main door is facing a hexagram that is P 9 or has the Li trigram on the top of the hexagram. Both these aspects resonate well in Period 9. If you are in the situation where you can actually select a Xuan Kong Da Gua based structure, especially in a new build, invoking a set up that has these hexagrams would be of a great help and improve the qi of the property. (In the Kun-Ren-Yi setup, we prefer the Greedy Wolf or Tan Lang Structure)
If you are unable to do any of the above, think of tilting your door to the closest Period 9 hexagram or a hexagram with the Li Trigram on the top. This relates to the door FACING degree.
Cannot tilt the door? Place water in those hexagrams or activate with fire depending what works.
A template showing these hexagrams is shared, you can place it over your property by aligning the center & the north either digitally or by printing onto a transparent sheet, so the precise positions can be identified on your property. This works well with accurate & to scale plans, not with a rough sketch.
A tip: Please consider including Basic 8 Mansions as well, into your assessment as this is a very important part of a Feng Shui solution. Flying Stars alone are never enough. Additionally, you need to relate the stars to your personal Gua to add yet one more layer. For example, the Flying Star # 2 may cause hell for a Gua 1 but is money to a Gua 3 and so on, which means each Gua reacts differently to each of the stars, regardless of timeliness. So this is one more layer to look into.
Then each Star has its own basic properties, a Star # 2 is a SICKNESS star, no doubt, but it is also a star that governs assets & property. All the other factors have to be seen in totality before you make a judgement that a palace or a star combination is bad or good, or past luck or good luck, without reviewing it in conjunction with the other layers.
Lastly, while a star combination may exist on a chart, that palace has to be present in the property, so when there are missing sectors, one has to know how to assign the various combinations to each palace, and what if there are less than 9 palaces (if you are using the grid method) then what happens to the missing combinations? For this reason alone, I always advocate using the pie.
Do take care of the Annual Shas like 5 yellow, Grand Duke, 3 Killing & Year Breaker when activating anything, that is common sense. Better to wait a year than activate in these sensitive sectors. Do not tilt a door for any reason if it is in a property that sits any of the above shars or is in one of these sectors.
Although this is originally about Flying Stars, let me re-assure you that there are several other methods to get your Feng Shui right, beyond a Flying Star Chart and if you are able to wean yourself away from the general “What’s the facing. What’s the chart” dilemma.
To know anything deeper, you would have to attend a class but this much information is more than enough to go on..
It's not very often that one gets to audit a 17th century fort. It's the actual home of my clients and I was called upon for a very specific problem. For reasons of securing the family’s privacy, of course you will not see any pictures, nor will I mention any names.Just read my long story.
I was brought in by the Maharani in residence because her only son, born after many daughters was in danger as per their legend, that the son of every fourth generation dies, this was the fourth generation, so mamma was, understandably concerned. Also sons were in short supply in this family, so ever so often they had to adopt a son, from someone of the same clan's bloodline. Apparently the family was cursed, many moons ago, but that's another story.
The Feng Shui relevance hence this piece was not folk lore but the property land formations. For those who are Indian, no explanation needed, but for those who don't know about our local Feng Shui equivalent - Vaastu Shastra, there are very specific outlines for the selection of an ideal property.
While I am not at all conversant with the details of this subject, I do know some of the "Vaastu guidelines" that interfere constantly with the execution of my work. This was a "Vaastu-perfect" piece of land, hence the problem. The fort sits South. It faces north and there is a huge drop in the land in the north, table mountain present but very far away. Huge door mountain forms the total embrace starting east to south east to south to south west, oh yes, south west. The entrance is in the East. So far, all good Feng Shui - wise. In fact, it should have been built upon the 90 degree pure east as per Vaastu requirements but the guys doing the line out during construction must have had a wild drinking bout the night before so they missed and it actually faces a very comfortable 88 degrees...
